Capitol Hill Watch for Week of June 6th
The House of Representatives is in a “constituent work week” this week. Many members will be in their home districts and some will be holding town-hall meetings and other events to discuss the budget process and legislative action items. This is a great opportunity to talk to your House member about the issues that are important to you. Information about these events are generally posted beforehand on each member’s website. For information about your individual House member, visit house.gov. The Senate will be in session this week but are not scheduled to consider any health related issues on the floor at this time. The Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee will meet on Wednesday to discuss draft legislation. While this subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Department of Health and Human Services, the planned discussion will focus mostly on the Department of Education. Information about this hearing will be made available at appropriations.senate.gov. The Senate Finance Committee will also be holding a hearing on Tuesday on the role of revenue (tax) increases as a way to deal with the debt and deficit issues. The Senate Finance Committee is the Senate Committee with oversight responsibilities for both the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Information on this hearing is available at finance.senate.gov.
