The Journal of Rural Health (JRH) serves to advance professional practice, research, theory development and public policy by serving as a medium for communication among health scientists and professionals.

The Journal of Rural Health, a quarterly journal published by the National Rural Health Association, is currently seeking nominations for individuals interested in serving on the editorial board. Terms for open positions of the Editorial Board will begin Jan. 1, 2026.
All board members serve two-year terms. Their duties include setting editorial content, soliciting manuscripts, reviewing manuscripts and recruiting reviewers.
Participation in editorial board events is required, as is active participation on a committee during the two-year election term.
The board meets once annually in conjunction with NRHA's Annual Rural Health Conference and via teleconference each quarter. Members pay their own travel and lodging expenses for the annual meeting. Potential candidates must have significant rural health experience and an established record of publications. Editorial board members must also be members of NRHA for the duration of their term.
Candidates for the editorial board will be evaluated on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, professional discipline/orientation; gender, racial, and ethnic diversity; geographic diversity; prior publication of articles; prior article review experience; demonstrated commitment to human services; and contributions that you may be able to make to the editorial board. Preference will be given to applicants who have previously served as reviewers and/or have submitted an abstract to the JRH.

Journal of Rural Health Editorial Board

Authority and responsibilities:
- With the editor, determining all matters pertaining to content and organization and, upon recommendation of the managing publisher or managing editor, determining matters pertaining to layout and design.
- Assisting the editor in soliciting and reviewing manuscripts for the journal.
- Supporting the editor in the implementation of journal activities. Specifics of such support may be related to decisions on manuscripts, recruiting potential reviewers, soliciting material for publication and writing editorials.
- Serving the journal as sounding board and promoter.
- Periodically reviewing the frequency of publication to determine its appropriateness.
- Establishing a nominating committee and recommending an editor.
- Monitoring journal quality and reviewing the performance of the editor on a continuing basis.
- Evaluating the performance of the editor on an annual basis
